Wind, People, and… Action!

The May Fourth Square with its May Wind sculpture in front of the beach in Qingdao is a major highlight in the city. The square is located between building complexes east and west, at the north is the city office and at the south the ocean. Click on any image to enlarge.

May Wind sculpture is the most notorious in the square.

The main square and surroundings seem to be always surrounded by kites and no without reason because the wind is its more frequent visitor. The sculpture name, May Wind, also reminds us of it. This monument is one of the largest in the country made out of steel. It is 30 meters high (98 feet) and has 27 meters (88.5 feet) of diameter.

My visit to the square was nice, but unfortunately it was during a cloudy and rainy day. However, after sitting for few minutes and enjoying the wonderful ocean sight, I could notice the tranquility and happiness of its visitors. There were many young couples and some toy and kite vendors giving life to the environment. Before a sad sky there were contrasting smiles from most of them who walked by; they were people who stopped to take pictures, cover themselves from the rain or point at something interesting somewhere between the horizon in the ocean and the walls of the buildings behind of me.

The umbrellas opened and closed according to the calmed, but changing will of the weather that granted a refreshing intermittent rain.

The rain came but the umbrellas also came along.

I couldn’t stop observing people, their gestures, mannerisms, way of dressing and behavior. All of this is a treasure that I hope one day I can share with some of you with more detail.

This is a common scene in which many tourists stop for a moment to take pictures of themselves at the wonderful square.

The dusk offered a spectacular moment of colors and city lights.

At dusk lights of the May Wind sculpture cheered up the night that stopped raining in order to witness the colored steel structure.  My tour concluded with one thought in mind: I wish you were here to see it.  For now these pictures are a little sample of the big picture the visitors can admire.
